One approach to making a Mural!
Stage 1 - Concept and Sketch
It took me about 60 hours to do the research, drawing and watercoloring for these 4 sketches. The Jungle sketch is about 13 feet long and 1 foot wide, while the other three are 10 feet long and 1.5 feet wide.
Stage 2 - Outlining
As the murals were so big (covering the entire amphitheater), I had to make the outlines permanent. So I first sketched in chalk and then painted over. This took up about 70 hours!
Stage 3 - Painting!
This was an L.A Works Project and the entire mural painting had to start and finish in one day. Thankfully I had 150 Deloitte employees to help me do this! However, they had never painted before, so to minimize tragic outcomes, I put together a list of painting instructions and pasted them all over the murals. I also put up color photographs (from the sketch) next to the animals with a description of the colors that went into each animal part.
Here are some pictures of the action.
